Final Speech - Public Speaking (Climate Change)

Climate change is a serious issue in this world today, and the situation is nothing new. Due to the lack of awareness, climate change is getting worse and worse over time. Every area around the world is being affected with warming winters causing ice areas to slowly melt away to increased temperatures in the summer leading to longer and more unbearable heat waves. One country has made several efforts to share out their thoughts on climate change and firmly believe human activity is the reason why we have this issue, that country is the United Kingdom. The UK admitted before that with their previous methods they have made contributions to climate change but are currently making efforts to help decrease the causes and effects. The problem is that other countries don't believe that human activity is the leading cause of climate change or global warming, and people involved with the United States government believe that it is not real. Everybody needs to do their proper research because looking over what this world has done after the industrial revolution; we are the leading cause of climate change. Going back to the UK’s views on global warming, the UK are firm believers that “rising levels of carbon dioxide and other gases, such as methane, in the atmosphere, create a ‘greenhouse effect,' trapping the sun’s energy and causing the Earth, and in particular the oceans, to warm.” This is happening by burning fossil fuels for energy and acts such as deforestation, and these harmful acts to the atmosphere have all been created by human activity.
 
There are many ways the UK can be affected by climate change. One way this nation can be modified is by increased temperatures in the summer. Hotter summers can cause more droughts, leading to increased difficulty of growing traditional crops. Warmer weather also includes heat waves to become more familiar and cold winters to become rarer. Rising temperatures will also affect the wildlife. As storms begin to grow stronger, this causes damages to animals habitats. The change in temperatures can also affect the behavior of the animals, which can lead to an imbalance between prey and their predators. What people have to realize is that these effects can happen to any other country, not just the UK.
 
Regarding the UK's economy, they currently hold the 5th global ranking in the GDP category. Their current GDP is $2.8 trillion as of 2015 where their GDP per capita is $42,500, and their labor force includes of 33.17 million people.
 
 
The reason why I am favoring this nation is that they have admitted to contributing to climate change and continue to impress me with the efforts to help prevent the issue. The UK is currently part of the Kyoto Protocol, which is an international agreement for nations around the world, setting reduction targets for their countries on emissions. The country has come up with a 2050 target, which is the goal of reducing gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050 from 1990 levels. By following up to achieve this objective, they are also building a low-carbon economy. The United Kingdom has made these reasonable efforts for their nation but most importantly for the betterment of the world. Their economy is doing great and only has a 5.1 percent unemployment rate; this nation has the money to improve any necessary efforts in pushing a real motive for fighting climate change. Climate change is affecting every aspect on this planet, and it is time everyone owns up to their mistakes and contribution to global warming as a whole and do what’s right. The United Kingdom can't push away climate change by themselves as it is a global issue. By everyone chipping in and making an effort only good conditions can occur, and the UK can ensure themselves that they will do their part.

The problem is that not everyone is on the same page whether this issue is real or not which is ridiculous, don’t know what they are doing is hurting our current environments or don’t care at all. I could go on and on about what the solution is to fixing this issue, and it’s simple. We have to reduce the amount of carbon we put into the air and other forms of pollution, for example dumping oil into oceans, that's it. It doesn't matter if pollution is coming from factories or coming from deforestation it has to stop and that is the only way. There is only one problem though. I already gave the solution, and it's already known, but not many changes are happening as a whole. I believe the solution is finding a way to convince everybody that us humans are the reason why ice areas are melting because of record breaking heat weather. The answer is clear and simple it's just a matter of getting every nation on board. It's important they do because we are only hurting this earth for future generations and why do that.

2nd debate reflection

In terms of this debate, I believe I did okay because I didn't manage time properly and didn't touch on some key points in terms of parent's coming into play. I would say I got close to half of what I wanted to say. I could have used some stats in terms of performance from actually doing homework. I believe my use of pathos was relevant to the subject at hand but could have elaborated a little more.

I believe the other team won simply because I was not able to touch on everything I wanted to get to.

• Kids go to school for at least six hours of the day.
• Our intended goals for our young children is to make sure they get an education but are also having fun and having a great childhood experience
• Young kids are busy and they shouldn’t be busy with homework, that's just the way children are. Younger kids need chances to play
• Giving homework is only adding extra time outside of school and it is a little too much for going to school for six hours
• The kids should be able to learn a lot in six hours if they being taught in the proper system

• The teachers are the ones giving the homework and they are the ones that understand what needs to be done for the assignment that they gave out.
• Most parents are years out of school because they are grown adults and have jobs, you can be lucky by having a parent who is a teacher for math, english or any other subject, but the problem is not everyone’s parent is a teacher.
• Enforcing homework and relying on the parents to be the practitioner can cause problems simply because teachers could have different agenda’s

TED Talks reflection

Making my first TED Talk was quite interesting. At first I thought I wouldnt be able to create one simply because all of the TED Talks that I have watched online have always been excellent in terms of introducing the audiences and presenting their information. I think what made it easier for me was knowing that I can record myself in private, im only a little shy in front of a crowd but only because its not a normal thing for me. Instead of being afraid or lack of confidence it just feels awkward so recording myself and critiquing myself through the process was a big factor in completing the assignment.

Did good:
I believe all of my information was correct and I was confident to give it out. Wathcing myself in my own video I dont feel I looked nervous at all I thought I was very direct.

Could do better:
I tend to have a low voice when speaking towards people or objects that are fairly close to me so I could have spoken louder and just edit the volume of my voice later on. I feel I could have dressed a little more formally because I look at all the TED Talks and all of them are dressed somewhat formally and somewhat casually. Trying to implement methods from those TEDTalks into my own I feel is key in trying to create a presentation similar to the ones that are done professionally.

For a quick second, you can find out which sport you love the most. Most athletes like to watch their favorite sport on television whether it is professional or collegiate, but in most cases, collegiate comes first. Most of us know the National Collegiate Athletic Association also known as the NCAA. We are all aware that this association is the reason why you can watch your favorite sport at the collegiate level. The NCAA’s revenue in 2015 was 912.3 million dollars, and it’s clear that these guys generate crazy amounts of money. If you look at a broken down version of how they made their money from 2011-12, 81 percent of the money they generated was from television and marketing rights fees. When I say television, that means for the people viewing NCAA sports from their houses. Now, a recent topic has been brought up not too long ago and still lightly exists now. This topic is a question, and that question is whether college athletes should get paid for the performances on live and national television, just like the NBA, NFL, NHL, etc. Well, I am here to talk about the reasons why this idea is not up to par.

The first reason is going to be observing which sports from the NCAA are receiving the most attention or the most views. Let’s look at the professional level for a bit. Regarding American created sports, it is clear that American football and basketball are currently the most popular games to be viewed. For the National Football League, their television viewing record is 111.9 million since 2005. For basketball, their record is 30.8 million, and these are the top two. When you translate these sports to the collegiate level, 74.81 million watched a college football event while basketball acquired 55.2 million. So, looking at the numbers, comparing them to other sports, these two are the most prevalent at both levels.

Based on statistics, basketball and football are the two most watched sports. For the athletes that play at the professional level, it is their job to do what they do, and it’s truly a blessing, playing a sport that you love and getting paid for it. Now let’s switch over to the collegiate level. For example, if you are playing college basketball on a full scholarship, in a sense, it's also your job, a coach has given you a full tuition, and you don't have to pay a dime to go to school. So what if you were to get paid at the collegiate level. Well, think about it this way. Professionals get paid millions of dollars to risk their body and risk injuries every time they play. Since that is the case, if college athletes were to receive checks for the performances, they might as well play at a professional level, where they have far more better perks than the college level. There is also another reason why this cannot happen. Players cannot just drop out of school and play at a pro level. In this world, and facing reality, trying to become part of a pro organization is tough, and this is one reason why they should get paid.

There is one more reason I want to cover. In 2009 Sports Illustrated posted an article about football and basketball athletes and what they did what their money. In that 2009 article, a study showed that 60 percent of former NBA players became broke within five years of retirement. They also studied the athletes for the NFL, saying that 78 percent of former NFL players became bankrupt within their “first two years of hanging up their cleats.” Now looking at these numbers is absorbing but also scary. In today’s sports world, many sports critics question the idea of young college athletes leaving school early to play a game professionally because they don’t know if they are mature enough. It’s shocking that maturity level is still an issue with some grown adults, but at the same time, it’s because the transition to college and professional is very drastic. So, looking at those numbers, if college players were to get paid this early, wouldn’t that be setting them up to become broke earlier in their careers? Of course, the situations doesn’t occur to everyone, but 60 percent and 78 percent is a big number. Looking at those statistics, I believe they should just keep everything the way it is now.

TED Talks Proposal

What I would like to talk about for my Ted Talk is whether college athletes should get paid in this day in age. This is a fairly recent topic that has been brought up and has been in the minds of several college fans and leaders. It would be interesting to settle the hype and let out the truth about if it would be possible or if it would be a good idea. I will explore both sides of the situation and will evaulate for those who dont know about this topic or how it would work.
First:
- introduce the topic to the audience
- talk about which sports are the most popular right now in the NCAA
- then answer that question with facts about which sports are clearly the ones getting the most attention around the NCAA

Then:
- if the most popular sports were to get paid how would that effect those schools for the other sports
- will it create a bias towards them
- talk about how the college athletes live and how they are teated

Finally:
- summary of all the info before
- let people explore for themesleves if its a good idea
- give my honest opinion to the audience

Good vs Bad TED Talk

Good: How to raise a black son in America by Clint Smith

Clint Smith's speech on how to raise an African American boy in America was kind of interesting. He talks about his childhood but the way he delivers, it almost sounds like he is talking about someone else but had the perfect amount of detail to let you know that he was talking about himself and his parents. He mentions his definition of the new saying "Black Lives Matter" to a point where it doesn't mean that everybody else or any other race does not matter, but merely because African Americans are the ones who are for some reason, at risk. They are usually the ones being killed by "police forces and vigilantes." Another reason why I thought it was a good event for him because he was very passionate about everything detail he was giving out. The tone of his voice and his technique, almost made it feel like you were watching a poetry aloud performance. He never actually became biased towards African Americans but was clearly giving out facts of what is happening in general, and how he feels about it. Regarding the quality of his performance, it was outstanding. Since what he was saying was coming from the heart he knew exactly what he had to say and made sure that he projected his voice towards every major angle in the event room.

In this performance, it felt as if the topic was not important. I have nothing wrong with people giving their full opinion, but in this particular speech, most of the time it sounded like she just wants to let you know what she does with her clothes. Now if she was talking about different ways or techniques to help other women with their clothes and selections, then that's different. But to me, it just felt like she was telling the audience what she's doing with part of her life. I didn't feel any inspiration towards it. Regarding giving the speech or performance, she did well, again, it was all about her so she knew exactly what she had to talk about and it seemed like she was ready for it.

What I wish for speech (revised)

I've always wanted to be a winner. Being in the 9th grade, playing freshman basketball and averaging 19 points a game, I was guaranteed that I was going to play at the varsity level my sophomore year. Only being a freshman and focusing on my current level, I would've never thought I would play varsity that early in my high school career. I've always wanted to be a winner, and I wasn't going to back down from this challenge. My sophomore campaign was great, though. I was a role player who would naturally come into the game and play with such intensity and hard work, that was the only way for me to get better. One day it paid off, and I became a starter for the first time. My first game starting I was playing extremely well, having 16 points in the first quarter. One thing did set me back that same match, finding out I broke my wrist two weeks later. I was only running down the court during a fast break and when I had to get back and back peddle I tripped on an opponent's foot with the back of my heel. I quickly broke my fall with my bare hands being the first ones to hit the ground. I've always wanted to be a winner, a big one too, and being a big winner meant winning the 5A state title, but we came up short that year, losing in the semi-finals. My junior year we had arguably the best team in the state, and we got upset in the first round of regionals. My senior year, my last chance, made it back to the semi-final game and still lost; in that game, we came back, and we had the game in our hands, but it was taken away so quickly all because of a mental mishap. I just wish to have a ring for basketball and go off to college to continue to do what I love, and that is why I came here. I have been given another opportunity, another year, another chance to win it all but with a different group of people. Although this is a wish, I am going to hunt it down as I have never done before. Even if we don't win it all this year, it would be greatly devastating but there are still chances for me to win and be a winner.

Life on Basketball Speech

First Speech

  There is a known saying "what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger." My name is Deng and basketball is what I breathe, but there was a time where I had to stop breathing my natural born sport.

  My sophomore year I played varsity basketball for the first time for Wakefield High School. I was a major role player for the team at the time but not a critical threat to opposing teams. I had a very great season, getting the first dunk in our new gym and exciting the crowd with my athletic abilities. But all that came to an end early for my sophomore year. I encountered a fractured scaphoid in my right wrist ending my season and not giving me the chance to play the post season. This was one of the most difficult times for me because basketball is everything to me and not being able to play for two months felt like a big piece of me was missing. This injury was unfortunate, but it taught me something. It taught me that basketball wouldn't last forever. It taught me to play every game like it was my last. At the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. I'm a better player than I was my sophomore year, and being out for two months led me to study the game and find out new knowledge about the game of basketball that I never knew before.
